For my Foundation Final Major Project I wanted to tackle the subjects of female body image and gender identity. I looked at the different ways we battle with our natural selves because of insecurities about how we look, such as body hair removal, the application of makeup and cosmetic surgery. By analysing my own body insecurities and those of other women I have started to explore concepts of beauty and femininity in our culture. The sculptures in this series juxtapose the repulsiveness of the natural human body with our perception of artificial flawless beauty.

This collection of work was inspired by artists including Helen Chadwick, Kerry Jameson and local artist Meri Wells who I had the pleasure of visiting at her studio in April. The large ‘birds’ have been coil built from grogged earthenware clay and are decorated with various media including emulsion paint, Japanese decals, coloured slips and glazes.
